Case IH 5 – TMF (Tractor Multi-Function) Controller or Hitch Controller / EDC (Electronic Draft Control): Hitch Lower Solenoid is Shorted to 12 volts

The system has detected that the Hitch Lower Solenoid High Side Driver circuit has a short to 12V. This means the electrical circuit controlling the downward movement of the rear hitch is receiving continuous or improper voltage, preventing the hitch from operating correctly (often resulting in the hitch failing to lower).

   Inspect the wiring harness from the hitch controller to the hitch lower solenoid for pinched, chafed, or damaged wires that could be shorting to a 12-volt power source.

   Disconnect the hitch controller connector (e.g., Connector C058, often the green connector) and inspect the terminals (specifically cavities 1 and 3) to ensure they are not damaged, corroded, or improperly seated.

   Measure the resistance between cavities 1 and 3 on the controller connector to test the continuity of the hitch lower solenoid and its wiring.

   Disconnect the lower hitch valve coil directly at the solenoid and test the coil's resistance. If the resistance is out of spec or shows a dead short, the coil has failed.

   Power Down

   Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

   Access the Hitch Valve Block

   Locate the rear hitch hydraulic valve block and identify the lower solenoid (refer to the machine's specific hydraulic schematic).

   Repair Wiring

   If the diagnostic checks revealed a short in the wiring harness between the controller and the solenoid, repair the damaged wire or replace the affected harness section.

   Replace the Solenoid Coil

   If the solenoid coil tested as shorted, remove the retaining nut on the solenoid cartridge, slide the old coil off, and install the new OEM replacement coil. Reconnect the wiring harness.

   Replace the Controller

   If the wiring harness and the solenoid coil both test perfectly fine, the High Side Driver inside the TMF/Hitch Controller has likely failed internally (stuck on/shorted). In this case, the controller module itself must be replaced and reprogrammed by a dealer.

   Clear Codes and Calibrate

   Reconnect the battery, clear the error codes via the tractor's diagnostic monitor, and perform a hitch calibration to ensure the raise/lower valve thresholds are set correctly.
